P (9a – 2, b) divides the line segment joining A (3a + 1, 3) and B (8a, 5) in the ratio 3:1.

a = 1 and b =

Acoording to section formula,

9a - 2 = {(8a)(3)+(3a+1)(1)}/(3+1)

9a - 2 = (24a+3a+1)/4

36a-8 = 27a+1

9a = 9

a = 1

also, b = {(5)(3) + (3)(1)} / (3+1)

  4b = 15 + 3

  b = 18/4 = 9/2

so a= 1 & b= 9/2
