i think it shud be done this way...

let rsultant magnetic field of Earth =B

and its horizontal component = H

now, we know H =B CosQ  ,  whereQ is the anle of dip.

so H /B = CosQ

=> CosQ = 1/root2

=> Q = 45 degrees.
