If we want to hear a train approaching from far away , why it is more convenient to put th ear to the track ?

Sound (ie a mechanical wave) travels faster through denser material mediums. Since the Earth is solid it is definitely denser than the air around us and thus the sound could be heard conveniently.

Sound travels fastest through solids and slowest through air. So the sound waves sent by the train on the track reach the human ear faster through the train track than the air. The sound reaches us more slowly through air.

A word of caution : dont lie for a long time listening to the vibration, because a train travels very fast.
