If you travel by an autorickshaw the fare for the first kilometre is different from the rate per km for the remaining distance. The total fare for a distance of 20 km is Rs. 37.70 and that for a distance of 26 km is Rs. 48.50. Find the auto fare for the first kilometre and for each successive kilometre.

Let the fare for the first kilometre be x, and the remaining distance be y

So, according to the question,

x + 19y = 37.70

x + 25y = 48.50

by elimination method we get

-6y = -10.80 =? y = 10.80/6 = 1.8 => Fare for the remaining distance = Rs 1.80

now,

x + 19y = 37.70

taking the value of y in this equation we get

x + 34.2 = 37.70

=> x = 37.7 - 34.2 = 3.5

Therefore, the fare for the 1st km is Rs 3.5 and the remaining each kilometre is Rs 1.8

Hope this helps!! :)

Can u Just tell me how you got 19y in the first equation?
  • 2
He got 19y because, out of 20 km that is the total distance in CASE 1, the fare for the first kilometre is x, so the remaining should be, y(20-1)=19y
