(ii) O,S, Se,Te - increasing order of electron gain enthalpy with negative sign.
Dear Student,
Electron gain is in the following order
O <S >Se<Te
Oygen has a low electron gain enthalpy compared to sulphur because oxygen has a smaller size compared to sulphur and charge density is spread over a small region and therefore Oxygen does not easily accept the incoming electron. From sulphur onwards the elctron affinity decreases because electronegativity decreases down the group .
Regards!
