in a meter bridge when the resistance in the left gap is 2ohm & an unknown resistance in the right gap, the balance point is obtained at 40cm from zero end. on shunting the unknown resistance with 2ohm, find the shifty of the balance point on the bridge wire.

 in first case :-    2/r  =  40/60

r =3 ohm

on shunting  the resistance in the right gap =   3*2  /   3+2 =  6/5         [ as both r in parallel]

now the balance point shifts as

2 / (6/5)    =   x / (100-x)

x = 62.5 cm

It is the correct Solution for this question

  • 5
a) 2/40=r/60
     r=3.      ...........1
b)on shunting Req=2x3/2+3=. 6/5
        2/l=6/5(100-l).........2
on solving
i=62.5cm
shift.    62.5-40=22.5
