In a paddy field, some broad-leaved weeds were seen by a farmer. Which plant

hormone would you suggest to get rid of them? What is the mechanism
underlying by which terminal buds suppresses the growth of lateral buds?
Suggest measures to overcome it.

Dear student,

Plant growth regulator auxin helps in the eradication of weeds, it helps as a herbicide and weedicide.
Auxin present in very high concentration in shoot apex promotes apical dominance. The presence of apical buds prevents the growth of lateral buds to grow. The lateral buds grows only when apical buds are removed.

Thank you!

Some SYNTHETIC AUXINS are used as weedicides.weedicides are chemicals used to kill unwanted plants growing with the crops. 2,4-D us widely used to remove broad leaves weeeds ot dicotyledonous weeds in cereal crops or monocotlyledonous plants.
The AUXINS are used by gradeners to prepare weed-free lawns. Thus auxins are widely used in agricultureal and horticultural practices.

The phenomenon by which the presence of apical bud does not allow the nearby lateral buds to grow is called APICAL DOMINANCE. Apical buds secrete auxin whi ch inhibits the growth of lateral buds. If apical bud is removed (DECAPITATION), the lateral buds sprout, i.e.,start growing. However if a paste contining auxin is applied on the cut portion of the decapitated shoot, the lateral buds remain inhibited in the similar way when apical bud is present.
