Adverbs are used ad modifiers in a sentence. It adds more information to the sentence, they tell us when, where, why or under what conditions an event is taking place or took place in the past. Adverbs can be identified by the distinctive ending of -ly but sometime they do not end in that way or may not be an adverb but an adjective. In most cases, however, the form without the -ly ending should be reserved for casual situations.
