In collective nouns, singular auxillary verbs or plural auxillary verb are used?

Use a singular verb if the collective noun refers to a group which behaves as a unit.

Example:

The herd of cattle has been driven into the barn.

Keep in mind that words such as 'people' are not collective nouns, but plurals; and they should be used accordingly.
