In conversion of carboxylic acid to amides, what is the correct procedure?
for eg. what we've been taught is: RCOOH+ NH3-----------------------> RCONH2
But in the Meritnation solutions, Carboxylic acids are first chlorinated, and then ammonolysed.
eg. RCOOH + SOCl2--------------> RCOCl + NH3 ----------------> RCONH2

So is my procedure correct too?

In such confusions you should always follow NCERT.
Both the process are correct. But for your procedure you can include one step more. That is heating of intermediate ammonium salt to get amide.
RCOOH + NH3 →RCOONH4 →RCONH2 + H2O
