in the extraction of aluminium...why we used carbon electrode..both as anode and cathode.......pls explain..with reactions...

Dear student!

We use graphite (carbon) as anode and cathode both are used when highly reactive Aluminium oxide is electrolyzed, the carbon anode is molten and degraded by oxygen formed and comes out in the form of carbon dioxide gas, while the negative carbon cathode behaves as inert electrode because the aluminium is more reactive than Carbon and so, carbon does not reacts with aluminium ion and just provides a plot to unite them as Al-metal.
