In the leaching process of gold and silver, why is the presence of air (for O₂) required?

Gold and Silver are leached by converting them to cyanides.
Oxygen plays an important role in converting the impure metal into cyanides by enhancing the rate of formation of the cyanide.
Hence presence of oxygen is essential in leaching of gold and silver.
