Dear Student ,

The major features of the model are as follows.
1 All protons are present inside the nucleus, which is situated at the centre of the atom.
2. Electrons reside outside the nucleus and revolve around the nucleus in well-defined orbits.
3. The size of the nucleus is very small in comparison to the size of an atom. As per Rutherford’s calculations, the size of the nucleus is 105 times smaller than an atom.
4. As the mass of the electron is negligible in comparison to the mass of the proton, almost all the mass of the atom is concentrated in the nucleus.
Drawbacks of the model...
a. Rutherford model is applicable to electron type atoms
b. According to Rutherford as the electron revolves around the nucleus it liberate energy regularly so when the electron looses all its energy it should fall in the nucleus which was impossible.

The emission spectrum is obtained due to the emission of radiation from the substances. These are formed when atoms or molecules are de-exicited from higher energy level to lower energy level. It consists of line spectrum of sharp and well defined lines. Thus, emission spectra are produced by thin gases in which the atoms do not experience many collisions (because of the low density). A good example for emission spectrum is Hydrogen atomic spectrum. When a high potential is applied to hydrogen gas at low pressure in a discharge tube it starts emitting a bright light, which gets separated into different radiations and forms spectrum on passing through prism or grating. The spectrum consists of different lines corresponding to different wavelengths. This is called hydrogen atomic spectrum. This hydrogen spectrum shows line spectrum and it is an emission spectrum. Hydrogen spectrum shows line spectrum of five series.
