In the question 'What is bakelite and melamine and what is the difference between the two?' The meritnation expert has stated that melamine is a thermoplastic , while in our text book it s given that melamine is a thermosetting plastic. This has caused a confusion. Please clarify.

  • Phenol-Formaldehyde polymer (Bakelite and related polymers)

  • Novolac, obtained on heating with formaldehyde, undergoes cross- linking to form an infusible solid mass called bakelite.

  • Bakelite − Used for making combs, phonograph records, electrical switches and handles of various utensils

  • Melamine-Formaldehyde polymer

  • Used in the manufacture of unbreakable crockery.

Yes, you are right melamine is a thermosetting plastic.

Melamaine and Bakelite both are thermosetting plastic. It depends onm the property of both of them. Melamine is fire resistant while bakelite is the one that is non- sticky.

Cheers!!
