in word european which article is used and why?

The articles "a" and "the" may be used before the word "European". 

This is because article 'an' is used before a word starting with a vowel sound. Though, the word "European" starts with a vowel "e",the sound is of a consonant. Thus, an cannot be used before 'European'.
