India is a secular state because the kind of diversity that exists in our nation makes its sustenance impossible without being secular. This is because India has almost every religious group within its population, there are hindus, muslims, Christians, parsis, budhhists, jains etc. thus, supporting one religions would lead to riots and disturbances in our society. Hence, India is a secular state.

Secularism mean something like right to do anything of our choice without a discipline. As our nation follows secularism we are so feeding and serving criminals, terrorists and many mavoists even though it is a shameful case, but we are in a position that even not to create harm to an ant like. So the dangerous evils like kasab and afjul guru are still alive today. This is more encouring other criminals to do unethical practices. Not only considering on terrorists from other nation, internal we have many like satyam scam ramalinga raju who followed unethical practices, in our poloticians there are many recently. We have to create awareness and have to eradicate it.

I consider a country as secular, when
there are no laws or rules based on or influenced by religious and similarly irrational beliefs.
there are laws and rules protecting people from being harmed by behavior caused by religious and similarly irrational beliefs. These rules are enforced.
no tax payer's money or publicly owned property is used in favor of religious and similarly irrational beliefs.

Secularism as practiced in India, with its marked differences with Western practice of secularism, is a controversial topic in India. Supporters of the Indian concept of secularism claim it respects Muslim men’s religious rights and recognizes that they are culturally different from Indians of other religions. Supporters of this form of secularism claim that any attempt to introduce a uniform civil code , that is equal laws for every citizen irrespective of his or her religion, would impose majoritarian Hindu sensibilities and ideals, something that is unacceptable to Muslim Indians. Opponents argue that India's acceptance of Sharia and religious laws violates the principle of equal human rights discriminates against Muslim women, allows unelected religious personalities to interpret religious laws, and creates plurality of unequal citizenship; they suggest India should move towards separating religion and state.

(1) All religions are equally protected
(2) State has no religion of its own
(3) There will be no discrimination on grounds of religion
or caste
India is a secular state as it ensures that people have the freedom to change their religion whenever they want to. It
ensures that all the people have the freedom to live by their religious beliefs and practices. No religious community can gain power over the other religious communities. No one can discriminate someone because they belong to some other religion. There can be no discrimination on grounds of caste, religion, color, creed and sex. The State can not promote one religion as the State religion. We have the right to freedom to religion.
