Indian cities did not expand as rapidly as in england in the nineteenth century .why was this so
Social Science

During nineteenth century Industrial revolution was gaining ground in
different parts of western Europe which led to the growth of many urban cities.
Such cities were hub of industrial production where workers migrated from rural
settings. Gradually such industrial cities started to emerge into modern towns
& cities with municipal facilities.

On the other hand Industrial revolution was not able to make its impact
in Indian cities to the sam extent. Infact many old craft/ industrial towns
lost their significance due to British neglect. British imported goods made
Indian goods obsolete & costlier. Cities like Masulipatnam, Delhi , Surat ,
Murshidabad etc started to loose their significance. Some presidency towns like
Chennai , Bombay & Calcutta formed municipalities for better civic
amenities were still they were not at par with western cities.
With the annexation of various Princely states like Baroda, Gwalior,
Awadh, Indore etc their respective capitals also started to loose their
significance. The Royalty which used to support local crafts, trade, workshops
was replaced by british control whose ultimate motive was to expand british
trade & goods.

Besides this Britishers did not support Industrialisation in India.
Infact loans , capital was not readily available for Indians. Adverse taxes on
indian goods in British market also affected Indian merchants & industries.
This inturn affected growth of modern industrial towns & cities.
