Is epithelium a dead tissue.,? And if it is then why the basement membrane is thin so that epithelium tissues can get nutrition from connective tissue as epithelium is dead it doesn't need nutrition?

Dear student,
Please find below the solution to the asked query

Epithelium can be keratinized (contain keratin) or non-keratinized (lack keratin). Keratinized epithelium has dead cells while non-keratinized has living cells as outer surface. So,epithelium could be dead or living. It does not have its blood supply. So, it absorbs nutrients and oxygen from cells present beneath it.
