It  is  important  to  increase  the  area  under  irrigation  because  it  helps  in  increasing  the  production  manyfold.  We  cannot  increase  production  without  irrigation.

Yes it is important to increase area under irrigation because : 1) There is uncertainty in rain therefore irrigation facility become important . 2)Modern HYV seeds require more irrigation . 3) Other modern inputs like chemical fertilizers pesticides etc. become uneffictive if irrigation facility is not available

1. It is important to increase the area under irrigation because it is necessary to reduce the dependency on rainfall and stabilize the cropping pattern. Irrigation also allows farmers to grow more crops in one year on the same land.

2. The Green Revolution was not equally successful for crops of pulses and wheat. Wheat production increased much more and the production of pulses did not increase in any significant way. This is because the Green Revolution was targeted at increasing the production of wheat and rice in the country through a combination of HYV seeds, irrigation, chemical fertilizers, pesticides, etc, while pulses were restricted to rain-fed agriculture.

3. Working capital means raw material and money in hand. It is used up in the stage of production. Working capital for farmers translates into seeds (HYV), fertilizers and irrigation costs in the form of electricity and fuel for running pumps.

4. Modern farming methods require farmer to start with more cash than before because of increased mechanization, cost of HYV seeds, fertilizers and investment in power and irrigation. All these add up to substantial costs that require cash inputs.

5. Many rural families dependent upon agriculture cultivate small plots of land due to unequal distribution of land holdings. A very small percentage of farmers have large land holdings. Incomplete land reforms have contributed to this situation. Division of land among succeeding generations of families also means less land for every member.

6. The distribution of land is unequal not just in Palampur but across India. This is because a number of rural families are landless and they have to earn their living as agricultural labourers by working on the land of other people. Most of the farmers have small land holdings and very few people collectively own large share of land. This situation is replicated all across India.
