is mgcl2 an acidic, basic or neutral salt?

The salts of strong acid and weak base give acidic solutions .

Magnesium chloride is slightly acidic because it is formed by the reaction of  a relatively weak base Mg(OH)2 and a strong acid HCl.
Thus MgCl2 is slightly acidic in nature.

HCl         +    Mg(OH)2 MgCl2+ 2 H2O
hydrochloric    Mgnesium    Magnesium       water
 acid               hydroxide       Chloride

To determine this, we must find the preparation of the salt.

Mg(OH)2 + HCl ==== MgCl2+ H2O

Magnesium hydroxide is a weak base and HCl is a strong acid. We know that,

a weak base and a strong acid gives an acidic salt. Therefore, MgCl2 is acidic.

Hope that helped you..

Magnesium Chloride(MgCl2) is actually a neutral salt as it is an ionic compound prepared from an acid(HCl) and a base[Mg(OH)2].The reaction that takes place between them is given below:

Mg(OH)2(s) + 2 HCl → MgCl2(aq) + 2 H2O(l)

The magnesium ion undergoes a tiny amount of hydrolysis. But this amount is so small that it realistically has no effect on the solution. So, it is neutral in nature.

Magnesium Chloride(MgCl2) is actually a neutral salt as it is an ionic compound prepared from a strong acid(HCl) and a strong base[Mg(OH)2]. Both the substances being strong, neutralizies each others effect giving a neutral salt i.e.Magnesium Chloride(MgCl2).The reaction that takes place between them is given below:

Mg(OH)2(s) + 2 HCl → MgCl2(aq) + 2 H2O(l)

MgCl2 is a salt of a strong acid and a strong base, therefore it is neutral salt.
