Statistics can be used in singular as well as plural sense:

In singular sense, it means the science of counting or science of average. It includes collection, organisation, analysis and interpretation of data. 
In the plural sense, it refers to the numerical facts and figure systematically collected for some special purpose. It is aggregate of facts, numerically expressed, collected in systematic manner for a pre determined purpose, that makes comparison easy.
