Mr. Otis buys the haunted Canterville Chase despite being warned by Lord Canterville.
The Otises arrive at Canterville Chase and are greeted by Mrs. Umney.
Mrs. Otis notices a bloodstain in the library and Washington rubs it out using ‘Pinkerton’s Champion Stain Remover and Paragon Detergent’.
The stain resurfaces time and again, which forces the Otises to acknowledge the ghost’s presence.
On the fifth night, the ghost makes its first appearance clanking his chains. This annoys Mr. Otis. He gives the ghost ‘Tammany Rising Sun Lubricator’ to oil his chains. The bewildered ghost is attacked with a large pillow by the twins.
Sir Simon recalls his brilliant three-century-old career as a ghost and determines to avenge himself for the insult.
For the first time, the ghost of Sir Simon becomes a topic of the Otises’ conversation.
The bloodstain begins to appear in different colours on different days.
The ghost reappears on a Sunday night. He tries wearing a suit of armour, but instead ends up creating a loud crash that awakens the Otises. His demoniac laughter fails to impress. He is given ‘Doctor Dobell’s tincture’ for curing his indigestion.
The ghost becomes ill and comes out only to keep the bloodstain in proper repair.
The ghost prepares to attack the Otises on a Friday night. However, he scampers back to his room upon seeing a horrible spectre. He returns in daylight to confront this other ghost, but realises he has been tricked.
The ghost keeps to his room and stops renewing the bloodstain. He roams at night taking every possible precaution, but still suffers at the hands of the twins.
He makes one final effort to restore his dignity, but ends up drenching himself and becomes laid up with a severe cold.
His nightly expeditions are put to a complete end by the twins. Everyone assumes that the ghost has gone away.
Virginia comes across the ghost. The ghost narrates his story and seeks Virginia’s help. He tells her the meaning of the prophecy. Virginia agrees to help him. They both disappear through the wainscoting.
The Otises send out telegrams to the police and launch search parties to find Virginia.
The Otises are about to turn in for the night when Virginia reappears with a casket containing jewels.
She leads them to the chained skeleton of Sir Simon and tells them that he has been forgiven.
The twins notice that the withered almond tree has blossomed, thus fulfilling the prophecy.
Four days later, in a grand funeral, the remains of Sir Simon are interred. His initials and the prophetic verse are inscribed on the tombstone.
Mr. Otis returns the gifted jewels to Lord Canterville, but he refuses to accept them.
Some years later, Virginia is married to the Duke of Cheshire. They return to Canterville Chase to pay their respects at Sir Simon’s grave.
