Dear student,

The following instances prove that the grandmother was attached to the narrator:

The story describes the entire phase of relationship which the author shared with his grandmother. In the early days of the author’s life, his grandmother shared a strong bond with him. She dealt with her life very well, although single handed. She not only took of herself but also her grandson. The narrator spent his childhood with his grandmother in a village. She was her grandson’s bosom friend. She used to bath him and sent to school. Khuswant Singh was accompanied by his grandmother while going to school which was attached to a temple. As the temple was close to the school, it was advantageous for both. The narrator sat in a row with other students and learnt his alphabet and prayers in the school while his grandmother sat inside the temple and read the scriptures.while returning from the school, he fed the dogs. She helped him in his studies also. She was like a second mother to the narrator. However, all this changed when both the narrator and his grandmother went to live in the city, with the narrator’s parent. However, that tie of friendship loosened a little when they both shifted to the author’s city house. She became resentful of the things being taught in the English school. Finally, the day came when the author was to go to the university. This phase of the author’s life was very painful for the grandmother and led to a complete separation of their relationship. The author got a room of his own and his grandmother led a life of seclusion. However, in spite of changes in the courses of lines, their feelings for each other remained unchanged. Even when he was leaving to go abroad, she didn’t display any emotion but prayed continuously. Same was her reaction when the author came back after five years.
After finishing his studies, the narrator returned from abroad. He was his grandmother’s blue eyed boy. So, on his return his grandmother felt overjoyed. She went to the station to receive her grandson, though she did not utter a single word. She hugged him closely and prayed silently. To celebrate his return, that evening she called some women from the neighborhood and sang the return of the warrior with them, beating the drums loudly. She did not even care for her health. The narrator’s return was like a boon to her.
