Constriction means thinning of the diameter of the tube or capillary while kink means sharp twisting or a narrow necking of an otherwise straight axis of a tube or capillary. In context to a clinical thermometer, both they terms are synonymous and can be used to represent the same arrangement made to prevent the sudden fall of mercury column in the capillary. Here both thinning of the capillary diameter and sharp twisting is being done near the mercury bulb to stop sudden fall of the mercury column when it is brought away from the body.
