Sir,

Subject: Inclusion of disaster management in the school curriculum

I am a regular reader of your newspaper and wish to use the columns of your esteemed daily to bring to the notice of the public the importnace of disaster management.

None of us knows when disaster might strike. The Uttarakhand flash floods, the landslides in hilly regions, the earthquake in Bhuj and Japan -these are just a few of the many disasters of the past that created havoc. The public needs to be well prepared and the authorities need to be 'war-ready' for such situations. The first step is to make the pubic aware of the dos and dont's in sch a situation-leave home for higher ground in floods, step out of bidings in an earthquake, keep calm, help each other, etc. Then comes the readiness of the evacuation plan and provision of search and rescue, medical help, food and shelter to the victims. Schhol curriculums need to include disaster management to make the children aware of and ready for any such calamity.

I hope that the public and concerned authorities will take appropriate steps to give due importance to disaster management.

Thanking you in anticipation.
Yours faithfully,

ABC
