The poem starts with a tiger in the zoo. He is taking the few steps of his cage as if measuring the length of the cage. He is in quite rage i.e. he is frustrated. In the next stanza there is a description of the wild tiger. He is roaming in long grasses near a water source like a pond to catch a deer. Third stanza depicts tjat if we keep on destructing the habitat of wild then the tiger will be growling around houses and will be terrorising the villagers. But he is locked in a cage where his strength is behind the cage and he doesnot care about visitors. At night he hears the voices of cars goig nearby. He looks at the twinkling stars and wonders why he cant be free like stars.

The message conveyed by the poem is that just like humans, animals too long for freedom and do not like being caged. For instance, the tiger in the poem longs to be in the jungle and he looks longingly at the shining stars in the sky. By looking at the stars, the tiger hope to be with nature some day.
