List any 5 social practices against the women during the British rule and write about them in brief.(at leat 1 paragraph).

Dear Student,
Following are the social practices against women during the British rule in India:
1. Sati: Sati is a custom wherein a widow has to take her own life by throwing herself into her husband's pyre after his death. The practice of Sati dates back to the 3rd century BC. It was mostly practised by some Hindu communities and certain Sikh aristocratic families in India. The practise of Sati was initially tolerated during the British rule. But later on many individual British officers made an attempt to ban this evil practise in India.
2. Child Marriage: The custom of child marriage had been present in India since ages and it was continued to be practised even during the British rule. Child marriages include underaged boys and girls who are forced to marry at a relatively young age. However, during the British colonial rule, child marriage was outlawed later on.
3. Female infanticide: Female infanticide is the practice of killing newborn female children. This practice had been prevalent in India since a long time. It was practised in many communities like the Rajputs, Gurjars, Patidars, Jats, etc. Many British officials have mentioned about various cases of female infanticide in their journals, books, etc.
4. Dowry: Dowry refers to the practice of paying cash or other valuable gifts to the bridegroom's family by the bride's family upon marriage. The traditional dowry system was actually a system practised for the benefit of women post her marriage. But this system was converted into an oppressive custom against women during the British rule in India due to the discriminatory policies against women introduced by the British administration.
5. Purdah system: The purdah system is a practice of seclusion of females where physical segregation is done through the use of curtains, walls and screens. This system was practised both in the Hindu and Muslim communities in India. During the British rule, the Purdah system was widely prevalent among the Muslim minority in India.
