List the features of different Phylum under kingdom protista..,.

Dear Student,

Kindly find your answer bellow:

Protista is a diverse Kingdom, under Domain Eukarya. Since, it consists of organisms that are believed to be the first eukaryotic forms, Kingdom Protista is considered as connecting link between Kingdom Monera and Kingdom Animalia, Plantae and Fungi. Characteristics that are common between all the protists are as following:
  1. Eukaryotic (Nucleus is present)
  2. Mostly unicellular, but sometimes multicellular organisms
  3. Most have mitochondria.
  4. Can be parasitic.
  5. They are either aquatic or prevail in moist environment.
This kingdom is further classified into the following phyla based on their similarities:
1. Phylum Protozoa :
Unicellular, animal-like organisms. They are heterotrophic, sometimes parasitic in nature. They are further subdivided into 4 categories on the basis of motility:
(i) Rhizopoda: Example Amoeba
(ii) Flagellata: Example Euglena
(iii) Ciliata: Example Paramecium
(iv) Sporozoa: Example Plasmodium
2. Phylum Bacillariophyta: Example diatoms
These organism colonise fresh water, marine water and moist soil. Their characteristic feature is the silica shell that makes up the cell wall. They are unicellular organisms that can be both colony forming (filamentous, mucilaginous etc) or free living in nature.
3. Phylum Chlorophyta: Example Chlorella
They are also known as green algae and can be mainly found in marin habitats, but rarely some of them are also found in fresh water and land. Chlorophyll a and b are the major pigments, apart from these carotenoids are also found.
4. Phylum Phaeophyta/ Ochrophyta: Example Brown algae (Fucus distichous)
They are the largest protists, some brown algae can be as large as 30m in length. They are mostly marine. Predominant pigments are chlorophyll c and fucoxanthin.
5. Phylum Rhodophyta: Example Red algae
They have a characteristic red colour, it is due to the presence of the accessory pigments: phycoeythrobilin, phycocyanobilin, phycourobilin and phycobiliviolin. It also has chlorophyll a and d, α- and β-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin. They store their food (carbohydrate) in form of Floridian starch.
6. Phylum Oomycota: Example Phytophthora
It is a group of fungus like filamentous protists. Their distinguished feature is the production of oogonia and oospores. They lack septa in their hyphae (unlike true fungi), therefore called coenocytic. Commonly they are called water molds.

There are 45 Phyla in kingdom protista. And the characteristics would include the points written in the book , like unicellular , eukaryotic etc...
