Dear Student
Tenses expresses the time ,when an action has taken place.
Tenses are divided into three types:
  1. Present Tense
  2. Past Tense
  3. Future Tense
Which are again subdivided as follows - explained with an example of verb 'eat' :
  • Present Tense -
  1. Simple Present Tense - I eat food everyday.
  2. Present continuous Tense - I am eating food right now
  3. Present Perfect Tense- I have eaten all of the food
  4. Present Perfect continuous Tense - I have been eating food for two hours.
  • Past Tense
  1. Simple Past Tense - I ate food yesterday.
  2. Past continuous Tense - I was eating food when you arrived.
  3. Past Perfect Tense - I had eaten food when you arrived.
  4. Past Perfect continuous Tense - I had been eating food for two hours when you arrived.
  • Future Tense
  1. Simple Future Tense - I will eat food tomorrow.
  2. Future Continuous Tense - I will be eating food when you arrive.
  3. Future Perfect Tense - I will have eaten food by the time you arrive.
  4. Future Perfect continuous Tense - I will have been eating food for two hours when you arrive.
