mam today are we learning about corrosion and rancidity??

Dear student,

Corrosion is deterioration and loss of material due to chemical attacks. It is a result of chemical or electrochemical reaction by its surroundings such that metal is converted into an oxide.

for eg. rusting of an iron

Fats and oils when kept for a long time get oxidised because of which the tastes and odour of food containing these fats changes and it becomes unfit for consumption. this is called rancidity. it can be prevented in the following ways-

  • Storing food in airtight containers
  • Antioxidants are added to foods containing fats and oils
  • Flushing packed food items like chips with an inert gas like nitrogen
