Mammals occur on land, air and water. It is? (Adaptation is the wrong answer)
Dear Student,
Mammals occurring on land, air as well as water is due to Adaptive Radiation.
During the Mesozoic era, mammals were small, few and generalised. By the end of this era dinosaurs became extinct and mammals suddenly expanded and grew into varied evolutionary patterns. They moved into habitats and niches left by the vanished dinosaurs. This evolution from a single ancestral species to a variety of forms which occupy different habitats is called adaptive radiation.
It is very evident fro the fact that, in mammals the basic body type has 4 limbs which they use for terrestrial locomotion; but in some they are adapted for life at sea, in the air, in tress, underground or on two legs.
Hope this helps.
