An ore of zinc other than zinc oxide is Zinc Carbonate (ZnCO3).
Conversion of Zinc carbonate to zinc is a two step process. In the first reaction zinc carbonate is heated in limited supply of Oxygen (Calcination ) to convert it into zinc oxide. In the next reaction zinc oxide is reduced to zinc metal using a suitable reducing agent like carbon. The chemical reaction are :
ZnCO3 ZnO+ CO2 (Calcination)
ZnO + C Zn + CO (Reduction)
