10. Mitochondrion   is a membrane-enclosed organelle found in eukaryotic cells.

 

Functions of mitochondria:

  • They produce energy required for cells in the form of ATP.

  • They also regulate the free calcium ion concentration in the cytosol.

  • They participate in apoptosis or programmed cell death.

 

 
  • The organelles which contain their own DNA and reproduce independently of the nucleus. They are said to be 'semi-autonomous organelles'
  • Chloroplast and mitochondria are called semi-autonomous organelles, because they have their own genetic material (DNA) and are capable of synthesizing proteins required for their functioning.
