Meritnation experts what is difference between Bengal and west Bengal I am confused

Dear Student,
Bengal refers to the unified and undivided region of East Bengal (Now Bangladesh) and West Bengal. This was before the division of East and West Bengal
West Bengal refers to the State of India.Since the Western part of Bengal was unified with the Indian Union it came to be known as West Bengal.

People of both side are Bengali. Both side means West Bengal (A state of India) and East Bengal (now Bangladesh). Bengal region = West Bengal + Bangladesh. A Bengali (Ethnicity) = A person who belong to Bengal region.
When India gained independence in 1947, Bengal was partitioned along religious lines. The western part went to India (and was named West Bengal) while the eastern part joined Pakistan as a province called East Bengal (later renamed East Pakistan, giving rise to independent Bangladesh in 1971).
