Dear student, Every point inside an electric field region has electric potential. And the electric potential varies from point to point. Now, to flow current between two points, there should be a difference in potential of that two points. Or you can they must not have same potential. So, in order to find difference in potential of the two points, we subtract one from another. And that's why the term is called potential difference. Regards
