Name the 3 layers of the adrenal cortex. Mention one hormone secreted from each of these layers and one function each.

Dear Student,

Adrenal glands are nearly pyramid-shaped glands which are located on the superior end of the left and right of the kidneys.
The structure of adrenal glands reveals two major layers called adrenal cortex, the outer one which secretes steroid hormones and adrenal medulla, the inner one which secretes catecholamines.
The adrenal cortex is further divided into 3 regions namely zona glomerulosa, zona fasciculata and zona reticularis and these zones secrete three different types of steroid hormones namely mineralocorticoids, glucocorticoids and androgenic steroids respectively. On the other hand, the adrenal medulla secretes mainly two hormones epinephrine and norepinephrine, collectively called as catecholamines.

Functions -

1. Mineralocorticoids regulate the balance of water and electrolytes in our body. They act on renal tubule. Example − Aldosterone
2. Glucocorticoids are involved in carbohydrate metabolism. They act on all tissues.Example – Cortisol
3.  Secreted in very small amount. They helps in the growth of axial hair, pubic hair and facial hair during puberty.
catecholamines - fight hormones and they increase alertness, heart beat and respiration rate.
