natural radioactive nuclei are nuclei of high mass number. why?

Dear Student!

Radioactivity refers to particles which are emitted as a result of an unstable nucleus. An atom is stable when the nuclear forces within it are balanced. However, if there is excess internal energy, these nuclear forces are unbalanced. This may be a result of excess neutrons or protons in the nucleus. A high mass number indicates high nucleon number only.
