Nitrate which does not give nitrate test

Dear student,

The lead nitrate would not give brown ring test because on addition of freshly prepared ferrous sulphate with lead nitrate solution, it will react with it and form a white precipitate of lead sulphate that obscure the brown ring.
The equation for the reaction with lead nitrate and ferrous sulphate is as follows.
Pb(NO3)2 + FeSO4 → Fe(NO3)2 + PbSO4
The test of nitrate can be done by the filter the precipitate formed by the lead sulphate and the test should be performed with the filtrate.

A nitrate test is a chemical test used to determine the presence of nitrate ion in solution. Testing for the presence of nitrate via wet chemistry is generally difficult compared with testing for other anions, as almost all nitrates are soluble in water. In contrast, many common ions give insoluble salts, e.g. halides precipitate with silver, and sulphate precipitate with barium.
