The last bargain is a poem written by Rabindranath Tagore which focuses on an unemployed labourer who is asking to be hired. In the morning the king approaches him and says that he will hire him with his power. The labourer refuses this offer as he doesn't want to become a slave to power. In the afternoon an old man approaches the labourer and offers a bag of gold coins to hire him. The labourer refuses this offer as well because he doesn't want to be controlled by a want for money. As the old man was counting his coins, the labourer left because he knew that once the money was over he would be looking to be employed again. In the evening a beautiful maiden approached him saying that she would hire him with a smile. The labourer refused this offer because lust wouldn't give him true happiness. When he refused her, her smile vanished and this showed that her happiness was sorrow in disguise. With tears in her eyes, she left the speaker alone in the dark. When the sun was glistening over the sea and sand a young boy was playing with shells on the beach. Upon seeing the labourer he looked up and smiled at him as if he knew him. The child offered nothing but goodwill and cheer. The labourer finally accepted this offer. He accepted this offer as power, money and lust are no use. The labourer was actually looking for happiness which he found in the innocence and simplicity of the child.
