Number of protons and electrons are same in an atom. Then why is it wrong to say that atomic number of an atom is equal to its number of electrons.

No you are wrong . It is right that the number of atom is equal to the number of electron present in it . Okay hope you understand it

we can say that atomic no.=electrons as they are equal to protons

Because atoms involves in a chemical reaction.During reaction electrons lose or gain to achieve nearest noble gas configuration.Atoms may gain or lose in reaction ,so that won't give the exact atomic number. So for every atoms number of protons are being counted. Thanks.

No. Of protons and electrons can differ in an atom under special case in beta negative decay .
But in simple case the no. of electrons are equal to no .of protons .
Therefore the atomic mass = No. Of p and no .Of e .
