oldest sailor on board could not tell

what does the author want to say when he uses oldest sailor words?

By the words the oldest sailor, the author means to say, someone who has much experience of the sea and has travelled to most parts of the world. He refers to the incident when they get caught up in the storm, and steered off course, by so great a distance that no one was sure in which part of the world they actually were.
