Only variations that confer an adventage to an individual organism will survive in a population.Do you agree with this statement? Give reason for your answer.

Variations that confer advantage to an individual in a population would survive in a population as the advantageous traits would provide an edge to the individuals possessing it and the individuals possessing disadvantageous trait would be under the risk of being out competed by the individuals possessing favourable trait. Ultimately survival of the fittest would take place and the indviduals with disadvantageous trait or variation would be eliminated. With their elimination this disadvantageous trait would also disappear but it cannot be said with certainty that it would not reappear.

  • They allow the survival of a species in all conditions

  • They lead to evolution.

All the variations do not have an equal chance of surviving in the environment in which they find themselves. The chances of suvival depends on the nature of variations. Different individuals would have different kinds of advantages. Selection of variants by environmental factors form the basis for evolutionary processes.
