Oxidation reactions of permanganate is carried out in the presence of h2so4 and not hcl. why?

Dear Student,

Oxidation reactions of permanganate is carried out in presence of H2SO4 and not HCl. This is because the Cl- ions formed are oxidised by the permanganate ions and so the permanganate ions are now not able to oxidise the other compound. Whereas SO42- ions by H2SO4 do not interfere in the reaction and just provide acidic medium.
