Dear student,

Following points may help you :

The independence of India with its offshoot of partition was followed by a large scale migration of population from Pakistan to East Punjab and vice-versa. Its economic implications were huge. They can be discussed as follows :

  • Distribution of population and area : There was uneven distribution of area and population. India was burdened with 82% of the population but with only 77% of the total area of the undivided country. The remaining 18% of population and 23% of the area went over to Pakistan.
  • Agriculture : All the better irrigation facilities of undivided went into Pakistan’s share. India was deficit in food-grains because it had to feed 82% of population of undivided India.
  • Industry : Some of the best raw cotton and raw jute cultivation regions went on the Pakistan. This effected India’s cotton and jute textile industry significantly. Migration of Muslim artisans and skilled workers dealt a severe below to cottage the small scale industries like glass, metal works, woollen and hosiery concerns of Punjab, Delhi, Rajasthan, and U.P.
  • Trade : The hostile relationship between Pakistan and India, made Indian trade difficult with former neighbours like Afghanistan and rest of the Central Asia.
