Pen down the central idea of the poem a photograph which revolves around the three different stages of life.

Dear student,

The central idea of the poem 'A Photograph' is that man is a mortal being and has a transitory relationship to his surroundings. There are moments of happiness and joy in man's life. But, one also experiences loss at various stages of life. The progression of the poem presents these ideas well: the photograph shows a moment in the poet's mother's life when she was a carefree child. Then the poem talks about the mother's recollection of her childhood and the poet's recollection of her mother (who has passed away). Death and the transience of life are explored in the end. As opposed to human life, nature is shown to be a permanent entity. The three different stages of life are the carefree childhood, adulthood as represented by the poet and finally old age leading to death as represented by the poet's mother.
