Phosphine is not used in smoke screens usually white or red phosphorus is used for making smoke screen grenades.

Phosphine is used production of smoke screens.

Shells containing calcium phosphide, on explosion, reacts with water producing phosphine which burns in air to give clouds of P₄O₁₀ which acts as smoke screens.
