Dear Student,

For IUPAC naming,
  • first select the longest possible carbon chain which has maximum substituents and functional groups.
  • then number the carbons in such a way that functional group gets lower number.
  • If functional group gets same number from both sides, then numbering is done in such a way that alphabetically preferred substituent gets lower number. Example in compound 2, out of chloro and methyl, chloro is alphabetically preferred and will get lower number.
For compound 1, the position of ethyl substitutent (-CH2CH3) is not clear, but following the number of hydrogens attached to carbons, it is assummed to be on carbon adjacent to -CH=O group.

On the basis of above assumption, the name of compound 1 is 3-chloro-2-ethylbutanal

  • Here, longest chain is straight chain of four carbon.
  • Numbering starts from right to give functional group, aldehyde (-C=O) lowest number.
  • On position 2 and 3, ethyl and chloro are substituents.
Name of compound 2 is 2-chloro-3,5,6-trimethylheptan-4-one

  • Longest chain is of 7 carbons
  • Ketone group is functional group and gets same number from both sides.
  • Numbering is done from right to left so as to give chloro lower number than methyl, as it is alphabetically preferred.
  • three methyl groups are present at carbon number 3, 5 and 6 so they are written in name as 3,5,6-trimethyl.
Regards.
