Dear Student,

The solutions to Short answer questions 1, 2 and 3 have been provided below:

Ans1 : Rotation and revolution
Rotation :
  • The spinning of the earth on its axis is called rotation.
  • Rotation causes day and night.
  • It takes 24 hours for the earth to complete one rotation.
Revolution:
  • It means movement of the earth around the sun in an orbit.
  • Revolution causes seasons.
  • It takes 365 and 1/4th days for the earth to complete one revolution.
Ans2: The change in the seasons is due to the tilt of the Earth. One complete revolution of the earth around the Sun takes 365 days. During this revolution, for six months, the northern hemisphere of the Earth receives more heat than the Southern hemisphere and vice versa. The seasons change on earth, depending upon earth's position with respect to the Sun.

Ans3: In a leap year February has 29 days. Thus the total days in a leap year, consists of 366 days.  Generally the earth takes 365 and 1/4th day to complete one revolution. 1/4 day equals to 6 hours. After every 4 years these 6 hours are added to make 24 hours or an extra day.
