1. Shifting cultivation is a slash and burn method of cultivation where an area is cleared is cleared of its natural vegetation and cultivated. The land is then abandoned and the farmers shift to a new area where the same process is followed. To practice shifting cultivation, farmers first burn the natural vegetation of the area and plant crops there. Once the soil loses its fertility, they abandon that land and move to some other area. Crops like rice, maize, coconut, bamboo are grown under shifting cultivation.

2. The government tried to ban shifting cultivation because it is ecologically destructive. Since farmers burn the natural vegetation every time they move to a new area to practice shifting cultivation, a lot of forests and natural vegetation gets destroyed in this process. Once the land is abandoned, it also faces soil erosion.
