Saccharum officinarum is the tropical variety of sugarcane grown in South India. Saccharum barberi grown in North India was crossed with the Saccharum officinarum  to produce hybrid variety of better productivity which has thick stem, high sugarcane content and the capability of growing better in North India. In this way it has helped in improving sugarcane variety in North India.
